2004 NATIONAL COVERAGE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Next up was the booth of Pat Armstrong of Hawkeye Baseball Cards from Burlington Indiana. Pat had a very nice framed c1890’s chromolithographed cigar box label showing football players for Yale Harvard and Princeton, 6 1/8” wide by 4 ½” tall, $115.00.

Next Armstrong piece was a cool little 1880’s die cut scrap of a baseball player boy for the Chicago Herald, 5 ¼ inches tall, $35.00 .

Next up is the booth of Bob Wetzel of B & B Baseball Cards from Maple Shade New Jersey. Bob brought two interesting little plaques. The first was a rather unusual one of Connie Mack, 8” round, done in relief, cast of aluminum, no markings, but appeared to be from the period, quite rare, first example I’d seen. $250.00 . Next Wetzel offering, a circa 1890’s silver plate billiards plaque. (close in shot) Appeared to have originally been attached to a backing of some sort, had an exceptionally detailed engraving of a billiards room scene. It was English, but still cool, very uncommon, good diversity for the show, nice piece, 8” tall by 6 ¼” wide, $400.00 .

Next on the tarmac was the booth of Ron Vitro and Ron Vitro Jr., of E&R Galleries/Fancraze Collectibles, from New Rochelle, N.Y. The Vitro’s had a very nice 1923-24, framed composite team photo of the Club Hockey Trois Rivieres of the Eastern Canadian League, 18 5/8” tall by 21 7/8” wide, $275.00 . Next, the Vitro’s had a c1907 poster size page from a Strauss Bros. Tailors catalog. The pieces showed an 07’ era football scene of a ball carrier in a union suit being pursued, bold and striking, 21” tall by 16 ¼” wide, $250.00 .

Next in line was the booth of John Ross, of Harrisburg, Pa. John brought a large 1930’s framed Chesterfield cigarettes advertising poster, with a great illustration of a baseball player dramatically sliding into a base. Striking deep green background, very good art quality, as Chesterfield posters usually are. 38” tall by 28” wide, $1,200 .

Next John had a, large framed, 1930’s advertising poster for Wings cigarettes; big, bright and bold, 36” tall by 24” wide, $800.00 . Next up in John’s booth was a circa 1880’s, chromolithogaphed “Sports” cigar box label, nice illustration art of various sport equipment, 9 3/8” tall by 11 3/8” wide, $450.00 . Next Ross piece, a Jim Thorpe post card, showing the great American icon in an Indian Headdress, quite a post card! $300.00 .

Next was the booth of Ted and Carol Murray, of Sports Publications and Memorabilia, from Quinebaug, Ct. The Murray’s had a very nice and large 1954 tractor company calendar depicting Ty Cobb. You see these kinds of calendars offered in the hobby and antiques world occasionally. They were produced by the Brown and Biglow company with different baseball stars. This was a nice one in very good condition. 33 3/8” tall by 16” wide, $350.00 .

Next was the booth was the winner of Sports Antiques 101’s “Best Booth of the National” award. The booth was shared by hobby veterans John Kanuit of Palos Verdes Estates Ca., Mark Nash of Goldsboro, N.C., and John Orban of Cleveland Heights, OH.

They’re booth was jammed with about as much good stuff as you could stuff. So much, that it kind of sent you into overload as you tried to take it all in…and that’s the way we like it! The first stand out item of the booth was a 24” tall, circa 1940’s advertising figural of a football player made of a composition material. I’m told it may have been for Carstairs Whiskey. It was reminiscent of the Kessler and Antique Whiskey statues, only smaller and nicer, not fiberglass, $550.00 . Next in they’re arsenal was a great circa 1880’s silk banner for the Wickwire Spencer Athletic Association of Clinton Mass., great teal color, very 19th century archaic, striking, 24 ¾” wide by 35 “ tall, $600.00 - see photo below

Next was a great 45” wide welded steel sign, spelling out GYMNASIUM, came from a college in Ohio, obviously an outdoor sign, probably off the side of the gym building, $250.00 . Next up, the Kanashnuits had two excellent, c1930 large basketball trophies, both about equal quality. The first I mention was the shorter of the two, at 17 ½” tall $800.00, the second was 22” tall $625.00 . I have examples of both in my collection. The 17 ½” one is much heavier than the 22” one, cast in white metal, it was produced by the A.C. Rehberger company of Chicago. Both trophies are among the best basketball trophies ever produced. Jeff White of Malibu Ca. bought the 22” one. see photos of both examples below

Next in the booth was a 1930’s, 5 3/8” tall Football trophy figural of a ball carrier giving the stiff arm, made by Wallace, a major trophy producer, nice little piece, $295.00 . Next up, Orban had a great 16” tall 1930’s figural football trophy, no award plaque, $1,800.00 . This trophy was about as classic a football trophy as you’ll see, big and bold, with the all important leather helmet, and classic Heisman type stiff arm pose The trophy was made by Wilcox Silver Plate Company. I have an example of it in my collection. The sculptor was A.B. Cianfarani, who worked for International Silver Company, which owned Wilcox.

Next in this power booth, was an excellent 1930’s art deco metal ashtray with a football figure of a ball carrier, again with stiff arm pose, pretty rare, don’t recall ever seeing another, appeared to be chrome plated, 5 ¾” tall, $325.00 . Next Kanashnuit piece, a very art deco pair of football bookends of a ball carrier being tackled, made of galvano (plaster cast, electroplated with copper), don’t recall another! 7” tall, $375.00 . Next, an excellent pair of quilted football pants, guesstimate 1910 vintage, $225.00 , appeared to be the last made of the quilteds.
