This
is my collection of Victorian sports board games. I put the
collection together many years ago, and haven't bought a game in
at least ten years. McLoughlin, Selchow and Richter, Singer, and
Parker Bro., were some of the top makers of board games in
the late 19th-early 20th century. McLoughlin was the king of
board game makers. They're games are always just a little nicer
and more deluxe looking than the others. The Home Baseball Game
in the center, and the Game of College Boat Race at upper left,
and the Yale Princeton Football game at upper right, are all
McLoughlin Brothers games. The first time I saw a McLoughlin
Brothers Yale Princeton football board game was in a photo in an
antiques magazine. I thought it was alright but didn't appeal to
me really. But after being around antiques a while I developed a
taste for them. Soon I started searching for them. One game,
that Game of College Boat Race was particularly hard to find. I
searched for years for an example. I gave $1,700.00 for it, I
think it was. There's a story to it too! I'd hate to be looking
for them now, as they've gotten much harder to find. I rarely
see them offered. I look forward to writing some more on sports
board games as soon as time permits. I've got some collecting
stories to tell!
Further
commentary on this fascinating subject of
sports board games is forthcoming, please
check
back. Thank you for your patience.
