Next was a lamp with a 1930's baseball batter figure made of plaster, Offered by Pat Armstrong of Hawkeye Baseball Cards, from Burlington, IA, figure 14" tall, price: $165.00
, nice little lamp, pretty rare as I'd not seen it before, reasonably priced.
Here's an eye catcher, a die cut stand up of Bing Crosby in golf attire with club, offered by Greg Rudd, 70" tall, price: $100.00
, must have been a bargain…as I asked the price and contemplated, Josh Evans snapped it up.

Next we step to the serious level…make that ground shaking level! On display at the National was a
football jersey worn by Native American icon Jim Thorpe
. I've never heard of a Thorpe jersey offered before. The jersey will be auctioned by a joint venture of Hunt Auctions of Exton PA., and Gurnsey's Auction house of New York City. The auction is tentatively slated to take place at the Borgata Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City on October 25th-26th 2003, and is part of the Sports Immortals collection of Joel Platt. When I saw it at the National, I really looked it over; you just don't see Jim Thorpe's jersey
everyday quite an offering!
Next find was four exceptional photographs offered by Ted Murray of Sports Publications and Memorabilia from
Quinebaug, CT. First mention is two framed photos of the 1906 and 1907 Harvard football
teams, each 17 ˝" x 11", price: $1,150.00 for the pair. You don't see many original photos of big name college football teams offered, especially nice larger ones like these.

Next, Ted had a circa 1900 hockey team
photo, 20" x 16", price: $350.00 . Just a good classic hockey photo, big. Next Murray piece was a
circa 1890's womens hockey team
photo, 9 ˝" x 7 ˝", price: $600.00 . Can't say I've ever seen a womens hockey team photo before, much less one from 1890, very striking and interesting.

Now this next piece I was quite taken by; an 1890 Dartmouth Foot Ball Champions
banner, (close
in 1890) measuring 12 ˝ feet x 6 feet, price: $1,500.00
. This was offered by Randy Kniffin of Middletown, VT. Just contemplating how I would display it wore me out. Finally after mulling it over, I figured I might be able to somehow stretch it across my ceiling, (where else?), so I offered $500.00 Kniffin passed, and was saying Josh Evans wanted it for his auction
(Lelands) I took his contact info and emailed him when I got home to see if he moved it. Never got a reply. Certainly not your average piece!

Winding it up, Tic and Tic also had a framed grouping of five 1880's photos of baseball players
. I was rushing, and in retrospect, wish I'd gotten it's details, pretty impressive, had the look!
Dan McKee of Reisterstown, MD had a darn nice double-sided porcelain flange
sign for Helmar Cigarettes, 23" x 16", price: $750.00 .
Lastly, I walked up to the Nash-Kanuit booth just as Jeff White of Malibu, CA., was buying
a 1930's white metal statue of a girl basketball
player, 8 ˝" tall, price: $350.00 . I'd have probably bought it, real nice piece.

And that was the best of the 24th annual National Sports Collectors Convention. I hope you enjoyed the tour, and that it served as a learning experience. Collecting is about more than just getting stuff….it's also about the people you meet, the friends you make, and the places you go and see along the way. It's a great, fun hobby. If you'd like to join in…this is an excellent place to start! Keep reading this column and soak up the knowledge.
