I came across this match holder on the internet while looking for baseball folk art. It's listed on the J. D. Wahl Antiques website, who are located in Richmond New Hampshire. Based on the ring at the top this obviously hangs on the wall, so wouldn't be considered a match safe. In the antiques world you occasionally see early decorative utilitarian items like this with a baseball motif, but they are rare.

I know I've seen this match holder before in the hobby. I believe it may have been made by the same concern that made a c1890's baseball mirror I have. My mirror has gold paint, whereas this match holder has white. The glass mirror is diamond shaped and originally came with a small cast baseball base that sat on the highest tip point of the mirror. Mine is missing that base, but going from memory, I believe the ones I've seen were identical to the cast baseball base on the front of the match holders pocket.

Dating this item is not easy as it isn't marked, and we have little to go on. We do have couple of clues though. There is a catchers mask on the front of the match pocket so we know for sure it's from after 1877 when the catchers mask was invented by Fred Thayer at Harvard in 1877. And the pill box cap would likely place it pre 1900. So we can fairly well place it between 1877 and 1900. For the sake of identification I've gone with c1890's, but it could have originated in the 1880's.

There is a small bit of damage in that the center strip of the fence has had the end knocked off on the viewers left, but the character of the modeling is such that you don't notice it.

This should more aptly be under Carlton's "Latest One That Got Away". I found this 1907 oil painting of James J. Corbett at the last minute. I had received the inaugural Legendary Auctions catalog about a week before it closed. However I'd been so tied up with my new Sports Antique of the Week feature that I never had time to look thru it. Although I had done a cursory of the auction on-line, I missed this painting. On April 30, 2009 I was in a restaurant thumbing thru the catalog as I ate when I came across it about 1:00PM the first day of the auction. It got my attention enough that I scrambled to the front of the catalog to see when the close date was. To my surprise it was closing that day. I called right there on the spot and asked what lot they were on. The guy explained it wasn't a live floor auction and the painting wouldn't close until late that night....he said the latest bid was $750.00, and so I hit it at $800.00 and immediately got out bid by a left ceiling bid. I hit it again at $900 and to my surprise was top bidder....that night I had to hit it again at $1,300.00. But got shot down later....that's where I folded. With bidders premium it sold for $1,920.00.

I have no regrets, it just didn't hit the gotta have it level for me to keep chasing it. However I will say any good boxing painting from that early is very rare, they hardly exist. Much less one of a world champion. I've never seen one before. And the quality is formidable...enlarge it and look at the face and hair....that's a heck of a painting! Plus it has a period/likely original frame. There is no mention of an artist signature in the catalog; but not having a signature can be overlooked if the work is of exceptional quality, and this painting would qualify.

James Corbett won the World Heavyweight Championship from John L. Sullivan Sept. 7, 1892 in New Orleans Louisiana. The bout was also historical for being the first World Championship fought under Marquess of Queensberry Rules, and for being the first time boxing gloves were worn.

I've picked up quite a few new things lately, hope to post more when get time, but here's one I got a week ago. I went to the 49er Old West Antiques Show

in Grass Valley Calif. Why go to an old west show? I learned a long time ago they are usually high quality and anything can show up....I once got an executioner football helmet by going to one!!!!...but that's another story...anyway...I spotted this Par After Shave Powder tin and it caught me off guard...I had to stop and think what it was and remembered it was the same image I have on a sign....so I sort of HAD to buy it...but darn they had it jacked up to $575.00. I looked it over and tried to develop some strategy to counter offer...or even if I really wanted it....I didn't start the wrestling match right then...I figured it wasn't going to run out of there for that much...so cruised the rest of the show....didn't find anything that cleaned me out....so started thinking thru what I would do....talked it over with antique advertising dealer friend Kim Kokles who was set up....he said try to get them down, and offer $450.00....I hit um at $400.00...the gal played the let me ask my husband card....she came back with a $450.00 whine they hated to let it go that cheap.....I said I'd split it for $425...she said they couldn't..but I knew they could....I politely asked her to recheck and I'd be back....of course they took it...who knows if I got a deal or not...a bargain's a state of mind....I'm not use to buying mint condition tins because they are always so expensive....I remember seeing a mint talcum tin sell at a show for $800.00 once, right in front of me, about 12 years ago, that had a gal golfer...so maybe I got a deal. When I got home I realized the sign is for the "lotion" and the tin is for the "Powder"...but what the hey it's the same company and image...I thought about selling it on eBay because of that but a week later and no way would I sell it.
